High Court Judge’s Remarks on Majority Rule Spark Controversy, Calls for Impeachment

Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court has come under fire for remarks made during a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (Kashi Province) law cell event, where he purportedly stated that the country should function according to the wishes of the majority community. His comments, which allegedly included pejorative terms against Muslims, have sparked widespread outrage, with demands for his impeachment. National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah has announced plans to move a motion in Parliament seeking Justice Yadav’s removal.

Legal and political leaders have condemned the remarks, highlighting their potential to undermine judicial impartiality. Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal criticized the judge for violating his oath of office, stating that such actions disqualify him from serving on the bench. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, on behalf of the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms, has urged the Chief Justice of India to initiate an in-house inquiry against Justice Yadav for judicial misconduct and impropriety.

The Supreme Court has also stepped in, noting media reports of Justice Yadav’s speech and seeking details from the Allahabad High Court. A statement from the apex court confirmed that the matter is under consideration, intensifying the debate over judicial accountability and the role of the judiciary in upholding constitutional values.
