Indian Student Deported After Visa Revoked Over Protests
Indian student Ranjani Srinivasan has left the United States after her visa was revoked by the Trump administration over her participation in pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed her departure, releasing a video showing her boarding a flight at LaGuardia Airport. Her visa was canceled last week, with US officials accusing her of “advocating for violence and terrorism,” though no specific evidence was provided.
Columbia University remains under scrutiny as the Justice Department investigates whether the institution concealed undocumented immigrants on campus. Federal agents executed a search warrant at two Columbia residences, and authorities have taken action against two individuals linked to past protests. Additionally, Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian woman arrested near Columbia last April, was detained for overstaying her visa. The university has faced financial repercussions, with the Trump administration revoking $400 million in federal research grants due to its handling of last year’s demonstrations.
The crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader immigration and national security policies. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shared Srinivasan’s departure video on social media, stating that visas are a privilege and should be revoked for those who “advocate for violence and terrorism.” Meanwhile, the State Department has not commented on the issue, as debate intensifies over immigration policies and free speech on US campuses.
