Amit Mishra Criticizes Shubman Gill’s Captaincy Despite Series Win Against Zimbabwe
Veteran India spinner Amit Mishra has voiced his concerns regarding Shubman Gill’s appointment as the Indian captain for the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe. Despite leading India to a 4-1 series victory, Gill was called a “clueless captain” by Mishra, who expressed his doubts on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast. Mishra questioned the decision to hand the captaincy to Gill, especially after his underwhelming performance as the captain of the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, where the team finished 8th in the points table.
Mishra suggested that Ruturaj Gaikwad would have been a better choice for the captaincy. He remarked, “I would not have made him the captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn’t know how to captain the side, he is clueless.” He further criticized the decision to make Gill the captain just to give him leadership experience, which Mishra believed was not evident in his performance with the Gujarat Titans.
In addition to Gaikwad, Mishra also highlighted other potential leaders for the T20 format, such as Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant. He questioned the logic behind Gill’s elevation, stating, “Just because he’s in the Indian team doesn’t mean he should be made captain.” Gaikwad was part of the squad for the Zimbabwe series, while Samson joined from the second match onwards, both seen as viable alternatives by Mishra.
