Congress Inaugurates New Headquarters Amid Naming Controversy

The Congress Party will inaugurate its new headquarters, named Indira Bhawan, tomorrow at 9A Kotla Road. The building, whose foundation stone was laid by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi in December 2009, has taken 15 years to complete. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and other senior leaders will attend the ceremony.

The naming of the building has sparked a political controversy, with BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accusing Congress of prioritizing the Gandhi family over other stalwarts like Dr. Manmohan Singh, PV Narsimha Rao, and Pranab Mukherjee. Despite demands from some quarters to name the building “Sardar Manmohan Singh Bhavan” as a tribute to the late former Prime Minister, Congress MP Rajeev Shukla and veteran leader Pawan Bansal clarified that the name “Indira Bhawan” had been decided over a decade ago with consensus among party leaders.

The controversy follows the Congress’s criticism of the BJP-led government for the handling of Dr. Singh’s funeral arrangements after his passing on December 26. The government has since agreed to establish a memorial for Singh in the Rashtriya Smriti complex, alongside a designated site for former President Pranab Mukherjee.
