Cyclone Remal Causes Devastating Floods in Manipur, Killing Three
Cyclone Remal has triggered heavy rains and severe flooding across multiple northeastern states, including Manipur. In the Imphal valley, the overflowing Imphal river has submerged nearby areas, forcing thousands to seek shelter in community halls. Three fatalities have been reported: a 34-year-old man killed in a landslide on Thonglang road in Senapati district, an 83-year-old woman who drowned in the Senapati river, and an elderly man electrocuted in Imphal.
Authorities reported significant flooding in at least 86 areas of Imphal West district, with water levels reaching chest-high in some parts of Heingang and Khurai assembly constituencies in Imphal East. The Nambul river’s overflow has compounded the crisis, with the Irang Bailey bridge on NH 37 collapsing, disrupting road connectivity between Imphal and Silchar. In response, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed to lead rescue operations.
Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced that efforts are underway to provide relief to those affected, with state officials, security personnel, NDRF teams, and local volunteers working tirelessly. Breaches in riverbanks have impacted both residents and livestock, with many people being relocated to safer areas by boats amidst the ongoing disaster.
