Gambhir to Lead Indian Cricket’s New Era, Zaheer Khan Considered for Bowling Coach

The cricketing landscape is set for significant changes following India’s triumphant win at the T20 World Cup. With Rahul Dravid’s coaching tenure concluding and the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20s, Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Gambhir’s appointment on Tuesday, ushering in a new direction under his leadership. Although the rest of Gambhir’s support staff has not been confirmed, names such as Jonty Rhodes and Abhishek Nayar are being discussed for key coaching roles.
Reports suggest Gambhir favors Abhishek Nayar, currently the KKR batting coach, and former India fast bowler Vinay Kumar for his coaching team. However, the BCCI appears to have different preferences, particularly for the bowling coach position. According to sources, the BCCI is keen on appointing Zaheer Khan, one of India’s most celebrated fast bowlers and a 2011 World Cup winner, as the bowling coach. Zaheer, with his extensive experience and previous coaching roles, is seen as a strong contender, possibly edging out other candidates like Lakshmipathy Balaji.
Zaheer Khan’s potential appointment has garnered support from various quarters, including former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, who praised Gambhir’s strategic insight and endorsed Zaheer as an ideal bowling coach. Gambhir himself has expressed high regard for Zaheer’s contributions, particularly his 21 wickets in the 2011 World Cup. As Indian cricket embarks on this new chapter, the finalization of the support staff will be crucial in shaping the team’s future success under Gambhir’s guidance.
