Paul Smith and Royal Opera House Unite for Festive Celebration of Creativity
British designer Sir Paul Smith has teamed up with London’s Royal Opera House in Covent Garden for a unique festive collaboration celebrating the “spirit of creativity and cultural heritage.” Launching on November 6, the partnership marks a first-of-its-kind takeover, uniting two icons of British design and the arts. At its centre is a Christmas tree personally designed by Sir Paul Smith, set within the historic Paul Hamlyn Hall, drawing inspiration from “the magic of performance” and the intricate artistry that takes place behind the scenes.
Sir Paul Smith shared his long-standing connection with Covent Garden, recalling his early days in the area before opening his shop there in 1979. “It’s been my neighbour and a personal interest of mine for a long time,” he said, expressing admiration for the Royal Opera House’s creativity and craftsmanship. The designer’s concept for the festive display promises a playful interpretation of the performative act of wrapping and unwrapping—an imaginative nod to the theatre’s storytelling tradition.
Sophie Wybrew-Bond, chief commercial officer at the Royal Ballet and Opera, expressed delight at the collaboration, describing it as a celebration of shared creativity. “This partnership is about opening up the Royal Opera House in a fresh and festive way—inviting everyone to experience the magic of performance, no ticket required,” she noted. Visitors can enjoy the Paul Smith festive takeover and a range of seasonal activities daily from noon at the Royal Opera House.
