Wrestlers Protest and Return Awards Amidst Sexual Harassment Allegations in Wrestling Federation

The Indian wrestling community faces turmoil as prominent athletes take a stand against alleged sexual harassment within the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Olympic medalist Virender Singh, known as ‘Goonga Pahalwan’, declared his support for fellow wrestler Sakshee Malikkh, who recently announced her retirement in light of accusations against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Singh, alongside wrestler Bajrang Punia, voiced discontent by returning their Padma Shri awards, symbolizing solidarity and dissatisfaction with the situation.

The outcry intensified after accusations of sexual harassment surfaced against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, leading to his resignation. However, discontent looms as his close associate, Sanjay Singh, assumes the WFI’s top role. The allegations prompted wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat to speak out, expressing concerns about ongoing harassment issues under the leadership of Sanjay Singh. Despite earlier promises and a government-ordered probe following protests earlier this year, assurances of fair governance within the wrestling body have faltered, leaving athletes disillusioned and raising questions about justice and accountability within the system.

The wrestling community’s upheaval highlights the ongoing struggle for justice and fair representation within sports institutions, urging a reexamination of leadership and accountability structures to ensure the well-being and safety of athletes.
