Usman Khawaja Opens Up on Racial Undertones in Criticism as He Bids Farewell to International Cricket

Australian batter Usman Khawaja, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket following the fifth Ashes Test at the SCG, has spoken candidly about the racial bias he says has shaped much of the criticism directed at him during his career. In an emotional press conference, the 39-year-old reflected on the challenges of being one of Australia’s most prominent Muslim and Pakistan-born cricketers, saying he had “always felt a little bit different” in the national side and in public discourse surrounding his performances.

Khawaja recounted the backlash he faced earlier in the Ashes series after suffering back spasms following a round of golf before the Perth Test — an incident that ruled him out of the match. He said the criticism, which he described as personal and sustained over several days, unfairly questioned his commitment and professionalism and echoed racial stereotypes he had encountered throughout his life. While similar situations involving other players drew little scrutiny, Khawaja said he was singled out and subjected to harsher judgment.

Despite the frustration, Khawaja said he chose to speak out to help future generations of cricketers who may share his background, urging the media and public to treat all players equally and without prejudice. As he prepares for his final Test at the SCG, the veteran batter reflected proudly on his trailblazing journey as Australia’s first Pakistan-born and first Muslim Test cricketer, noting that his legacy extends beyond the field as a strong advocate against racial discrimination in sport.
