Maharashtra Government to Extend OBC Benefits to Marathas, Sparks Controversy

In a significant development, the Maharashtra government has announced its intention to extend all benefits currently enjoyed by Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state to the Maratha community. This interim arrangement is to be in place until the Marathas receive formal reservations. The decision follows a draft notification stating that all blood relatives of the Maratha community, with proper records, are members of the agrarian Kunbi community, thereby qualifying them for OBC benefits.

Union Minister Narayan Rane has expressed strong disagreement with the state government’s decision. In a statement made in Marathi on X (formerly Twitter), Rane criticized the move as an encroachment on the rights of other backward communities and warned that it might lead to dissatisfaction and unrest in the state. Rane plans to hold a press conference to discuss the issue further. His concerns reflect the complex socio-political dynamics involved in reservation policies in India.

The situation was further complicated by an indefinite fast initiated by activist Manoj Jarange, demanding the inclusion of all Maratha community members in the OBC category. The fast was called off following the government’s draft notification, but Jarange has vowed to continue the agitation until the benefits are fully implemented as per the notification. This ongoing controversy highlights the challenges faced by the government in balancing the interests of various communities in the state.
