Chhota Rajan Convicted for 2001 Murder of Hotelier Jaya Shetty

A special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) convicted gangster Chhota Rajan for the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001. Special Judge AM Patil found Rajan guilty, with the sentencing expected to be announced later in the day. Shetty, owner of the Golden Crown hotel in central Mumbai, had been receiving extortion threats from Rajan’s gang before being shot dead by two gang members on May 4, 2001.

Shetty’s murder occurred despite having a police security cover, which was inexplicably withdrawn two months prior to the incident. After the attack, hotel staff managed to apprehend one of the shooters. Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is currently imprisoned in Delhi’s Tihar Jail following his deportation from Indonesia in 2015.

In related news, Rajan recently made headlines for suing the creators of the Netflix series ‘Scoop’ for using his likeness without permission. The series, which centers on the story of journalist Jigna Vora and the murder of fellow journalist J Dey, led to Rajan’s life sentence in 2018.
