Opposition Leaders Protest Alleged Attacks on Constitution in Parliament

In a dramatic display of solidarity and defiance, leaders from the Opposition-led INDIA bloc, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others, convened at the Parliament complex on Monday. Their gathering marked the commencement of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, where they vociferously protested what they described as an assault on the Constitution by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi, addressing reporters amid the symbolic gesture of holding up booklets of the Constitution, declared, “The attack that the Prime Minister and Amit Shah are launching on the Constitution is not acceptable to us. We will not let this happen.” This statement came in response to Prime Minister Modi’s earlier criticism of the Congress party over the Emergency imposed in 1975, which he labeled as a “black spot” on democracy.

The opposition MPs, carrying copies of the Constitution and chanting slogans in defense of democracy, emphasized their commitment to upholding constitutional values. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi was also present alongside other prominent leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge and representatives from Trinamool Congress and DMK. Their collective demonstration aimed to underscore their stance on safeguarding the principles enshrined in India’s foundational legal document amidst the ongoing political discourse.

The visual spectacle of opposition MPs clutching the Constitution tightly while rallying against perceived threats resonated strongly, signaling a robust challenge to the ruling government’s policies and rhetoric on constitutional matters. As the parliamentary session unfolds, the echoes of this protest are likely to reverberate within the legislative halls, setting the tone for potential debates and confrontations over constitutional interpretation and democratic norms.
