Civic Volunteer Confesses to Rape and Murder of Trainee Doctor in Kolkata, Requests Death Penalty
A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, arrested for the heinous rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has confessed to the crime and pleaded for the death penalty, according to police sources. Roy, who was stationed at the police outpost within the hospital, was apprehended based on CCTV footage showing him entering the building where the victim’s body was discovered.
During interrogation, Roy admitted not only to the brutal crime but also to previous violent behavior towards his mother, sister, and wife, with a past complaint filed against him for domestic abuse. Authorities have seized his mobile phone, which allegedly contains disturbing and violent pornography, raising concerns about his mental state. The investigation continues as police collect statements from hospital staff and other personnel.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued a stern warning to the Kolkata police, demanding swift action and resolution of the case. She has stated that if the case remains unresolved by August 18, it will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further inquiry.
