PM Modi Calls for Faster Verdicts in Crimes Against Women Amid Kolkata Rape-Murder Outrage
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need for faster verdicts in cases of crimes against women, stating that such measures are essential for ensuring their safety. Speaking at an event in Delhi marking 75 years of the Supreme Court, he highlighted the grave concerns society faces regarding atrocities against women and the safety of children. The PM’s remarks follow the widespread outrage over the recent rape-murder of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata.
Modi pointed out that while several laws exist to protect women’s safety, including the 2019 fast-track courts law, the judicial system needs to become more active in delivering swift justice. He called for the strengthening of district monitoring committees to ensure that these laws are implemented effectively. “The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get,” he asserted.
The Prime Minister’s comments came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to him, urging for stricter central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder. Responding to her letter, the central government reiterated the strength of existing laws and encouraged the state to enforce them rigorously to enhance the criminal justice system.
