Venezuelan Fashion Aficionados Redefine Style in Bold “Battle of Outfits”

Ninety fashion enthusiasts turned heads on Saturday at Venezuela’s National Art Gallery, showcasing daring ensembles of lace, denim, cotton, satin, and recycled garments in an eclectic “battle of outfits.” The event celebrated self-expression and challenged conventional fashion norms, with participants strutting in bold mixes such as skirts over pants, plunging necklines, and heels paired with high boots.

The contest’s winner, 28-year-old Alejandro Castro, impressed with an outfit inspired by Miguel Otero Silva’s novel Casas Muertas, featuring earthy tones, a deep neckline, a crop top, and a flowing white skirt accented with a scarf-belt. “It’s about existing in resistance, in a country that doesn’t always agree with you,” Castro said, emphasizing fashion’s role as cultural resistance in Venezuela.

Organized by designer Miguel Soriano, the event embraced urban and street culture, with rap performances complementing the runway. Many participants crafted their looks from used or low-cost materials, underscoring creativity over big brands. Some even infused cinematic and global cultural references, like 20-year-old Anjuliet Duran, who styled herself as a playful “Chinese Phantom of the Opera.”
