AAP Leader Arvind Kejriwal Summoned by Goa Court Over Alleged Code of Conduct Violation

A court in Goa has issued a summons to Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in connection with an alleged violation of the model code of conduct. The summons, issued by the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Mapusa, requires Kejriwal to appear before the court on November 29. The case, registered under the Representation of the People Act and section 171 (E) of the Indian Penal Code related to bribery, has sparked curiosity and concern within the political sphere.

The AAP’s local unit in Goa acknowledged receiving the summons but expressed unawareness regarding the specific details of the criminal case against the Delhi Chief Minister. AAP Goa chief Amit Palekar stated that they were informed about the summons merely a day prior to Kejriwal’s scheduled appearance in court. Palekar, who is also a lawyer, affirmed his intention to represent Kejriwal in court on Wednesday and expressed plans to obtain the case documents before considering a challenge to the proceedings in a higher court.

The case appears to stem from a charge sheet filed in 2018, although the specifics and intricacies surrounding the alleged violation remain undisclosed. AAP, despite facing this legal hurdle, has been actively involved in Goa’s political landscape, contesting assembly elections in both 2017 and 2022. While the party faced a setback in 2017, failing to secure any seats, it marked a partial victory in 2022 by winning two seats. The unfolding legal proceedings have raised questions about their potential impact on Kejriwal and AAP’s future engagements in the state.
