Depression in Bay of Bengal to Cross Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh Coast, Chennai on High Alert

A depression in the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the Tamil Nadu coast, prompting high alerts in Chennai and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the depression, currently located 490 km east-southeast of Chennai, is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Nellore by the early hours of October 17, bringing heavy to hefty rainfall across the region. Squally weather with wind speeds up to 60 km/h is forecasted for the southwest Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh.

In response to the expected impact, the Tamil Nadu government has declared holidays for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts. Emergency services are on high alert with disaster management teams and relief centers ready for action. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel as authorities work to mitigate the effects of the heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Chennai and its neighboring districts have already experienced flooding due to heavy rains ahead of the depression’s landfall. Fishermen have been warned to avoid venturing into the sea, and the IMD continues to monitor the evolving situation, urging the public to stay informed through official advisories.
