Lakshadweep Boosts Tourism with Airport Expansions and Luxury Resorts

In a significant move to enhance tourist accessibility and accommodation, the Lakshadweep administration has embarked on a comprehensive plan to upgrade its connectivity and hospitality infrastructure. Airlines including Fly19, Spice Jet, and Indigo are set to initiate operations on Agatti Island, marking a new era of air travel to the region. The existing Agatti Island airport is slated for a major ₹4,500 crore expansion by L&T, aimed at extending the runway to 2,800 meters to accommodate more flights. This development comes as a boon to the island, which previously had limited connections, relying on a single daily flight by Alliance Airlines and a weekly ship service from Kochi to Kavaratti.

To cater to the expected influx of tourists, the Tata Group has proposed the establishment of three Taj resorts on Suheli, Minicoy, and Kadmat islands, with approvals already in place for Suheli and Kadmat. These resorts will feature over 100 rooms each, including India’s first Lagoon Villas, promising visitors a luxurious stay without compromising the islands’ environmental sanctity. The projects have passed rigorous Environmental Impact Assessments, ensuring sustainable development that respects the delicate coastal ecosystem.

The local community has expressed mixed feelings about the rapid developments. While there is an appreciation for the potential employment opportunities, concerns have been raised about the lack of public consultation and the impact on the island’s culture and heritage. The administration assures that all projects follow strict environmental guidelines and aims to balance development with cultural preservation. As Lakshadweep positions itself as a rival to the Maldives, the future of tourism in the archipelago looks promising, albeit with a keen eye on sustainable and inclusive growth.
