Nike Makes History with First-Ever Sneaker Launch in Africa

American sportswear giant Nike has set a global precedent by launching its latest sneaker, the RK61, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, before any other market. The collaboration with Paris-based creative collective Air Afrique marks the first time Nike has debuted a sneaker in Africa prior to its worldwide release. The RK61, a hybrid between a loafer and a sneaker featuring Nike’s signature Air technology, incorporates design elements inspired by the now-defunct Pan-African airline, including a jet-engine-inspired Air Max unit, Morse code spelling “Air Afrique” on the outsole, and a jacquard sock liner reminiscent of aircraft seats. The sneaker, retailing at $210, celebrates both innovation and African cultural heritage.

The launch campaign highlights influential African creatives and athletes, featuring sprinter Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith and football legend Didier Drogba. Air Afrique, comprising Lamine Diaoune, Djiby Kebe, Jeremy Konko, and Ahmadou-Bamba Thiam, brings a multidisciplinary approach to storytelling, connecting communities through shared Afro-diasporic memories and cultural nostalgia. Nike’s marketing leaders emphasize the significance of tapping Africa’s creative scene, noting that debuting in Abidjan honors both the airline’s legacy and the continent’s booming cultural influence on the global stage.

The Abidjan launch at the Blu Lab concept store drew widespread attention, selling out quickly and offering locals the chance to experience a major sneaker drop firsthand. Blu Lab founder Gaston Ouedraogo highlighted the importance of providing African consumers direct access to limited-edition releases, reducing dependency on overseas networks. By combining immersive retail experiences with strategic storytelling, Nike’s collaboration with Air Afrique demonstrates the potential for future sneaker launches across the continent, signaling Africa’s growing relevance in the global fashion and sportswear market.
