Zomato Temporarily Suspends Non-Veg Deliveries in Several States Amid Ayodhya Event

In response to government directives coinciding with the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, food delivery giant Zomato temporarily suspended the delivery of non-vegetarian items in several states. The decision came to light after a customer in Bhopal complained on social media about the unavailability of chicken, speculating that it might be due to a lack of meat supply during the Pram Pratishtha ceremony. Zomato responded, clarifying that they had disabled non-veg deliveries in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, aligning with state-level prohibitions on the sale of meat and fish on January 22.

The move by Zomato mirrors the decisions of several states, including Uttar Pradesh, to prohibit the sale of meat and fish on January 22 in light of the Ram Temple event. Varun Khera, head of the National Restaurant Association of India in Uttar Pradesh, noted that all restaurants in the state decided to serve only vegetarian food on the specified date. As part of the consecration ceremony, meat shops in the affected states were closed on Monday following an order by Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra. Additionally, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the closure of meat shops until 4 pm on Monday, urging restaurants to refrain from serving non-vegetarian food until 2 pm.

Varun Khera, representing the National Restaurant Association of India in Uttar Pradesh, shared that the decision to serve only vegetarian food on January 22 was a collective choice made by all restaurants in the state. In a coordinated effort to honor the Ram Temple event, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam also announced temporary closures of meat shops and urged restaurants to limit non-vegetarian offerings. These measures were part of broader state-level instructions to ensure the peaceful observance of the consecration ceremony, impacting various sectors, including the food delivery industry.
