Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Stuns Tokyo Gold Medallist in Paris Olympics
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat achieved a sensational victory at the Paris Olympics on August 6, defeating Tokyo Olympics gold medallist and four-time World Champion Yui Susaki in the Round of 16 of the women’s 50kg category. Phogat triumphed over the top-seeded Japanese wrestler with a narrow 3-2 win, marking Susaki’s first international defeat. Phogat’s jubilation was palpable as she celebrated the win, moving to tears and jumping in the air in excitement.
Phogat continued her remarkable journey by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals, securing her place in the semi-final. The 29-year-old wrestler’s determination and skill were on full display, especially when she celebrated even with the score tied at 2-2, knowing she would win due to scoring the last point. However, the judges’ call was challenged by Susaki’s team, and upon review, Phogat was awarded an additional point, solidifying her victory.
This victory is particularly significant given Phogat’s tumultuous 2023, during which she was a key figure in protests against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment and mismanagement. Despite these challenges, Phogat’s resilience has shone through, and she now stands just one win away from securing a medal for India in the Paris Olympics.
