Delhi High Court Revives CBI’s Challenge Against 2G Scam Acquittals

The Delhi High Court has granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) permission to appeal against the acquittal of former telecom minister A Raja, firms, and other individuals in the infamous 2G spectrum allocation case. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma ruled that, based on the evidence presented and arguments made, there is a prima facie case for the CBI that merits a detailed examination. The court has scheduled the hearing for May, reigniting a legal battle over one of India’s biggest corruption scandals.

This decision marks a significant moment in the prolonged legal saga of the 2G spectrum case, wherein a special court in December 2017 cleared A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi, and several others of all charges in the CBI and Enforcement Directorate cases related to the scandal. The acquittal had been a major setback for the CBI, which has now been given a chance to present its case anew before the high court.

The “leave to appeal” granted by the high court comes after the CBI filed its appeal in 2018, challenging the trial court’s verdict. This move by the judiciary opens the doors to a comprehensive re-examination of the case against the backdrop of allegations of massive irregularities in the allocation of 2G spectrum licenses during Raja’s tenure as telecom minister. The upcoming hearings in May are awaited with keen interest, as they promise to add a new chapter to the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.
