ED Summons TMC Leader Mahua Moitra in FEMA Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued new summons on Wednesday to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, concerning an ongoing case of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations. Businessman Darshan Hiranandani is also summoned by the probe agency, with both individuals expected to appear before it on March 28. The ED’s investigation primarily focuses on transactions related to a non-resident external (NRE) account, in addition to scrutinizing various other foreign remittances and fund transfers.

Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December due to allegations of “unethical conduct,” remains a significant figure within the TMC, being nominated to contest from the Krishnanagar seat in West Bengal for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Her political journey has seen notable challenges, including recent raids on her premises by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a separate cash-for-query case, following directives from the Lokpal to investigate complaints made against her by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey.

The case against Moitra and Hiranandani underscores the ongoing efforts by Indian authorities to clamp down on financial irregularities and enforce compliance with the country’s stringent foreign exchange laws. The outcome of these investigations could have implications not just for the individuals involved but also for the political landscape as the nation approaches another electoral milestone.
