Global Keralite Community Raises Rs 34 Crore for Indian Man’s Release from Saudi Death Row

In an unprecedented display of solidarity, Keralites around the world have successfully crowdfunded Rs 34 crore to save Abdul Rahim, a native of Kozhikode, from the death penalty in Saudi Arabia. Rahim, who has been imprisoned since 2006 following the accidental death of a 15-year-old boy under his care, was facing execution unless the substantial blood money demanded by the victim’s family was paid. The collective effort peaked with the involvement of celebrities, politicians, and expatriates, ensuring the required sum was raised before the April 16 deadline.

The tragedy that led to Rahim’s incarceration occurred shortly after he moved to Saudi Arabia to work as a driver. Assigned to care for a paralyzed teenager requiring life support, Rahim faced a dreadful turn of events when the apparatus malfunctioned during a drive, resulting in the boy’s death. Subsequently, Rahim was sentenced to death in 2018, a ruling upheld by Saudi Arabia’s top court. It wasn’t until last year that the victim’s family agreed to pardon him in exchange for the blood money.

Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, praised the global community’s effort on social media, celebrating this act of unity as a testament to the state’s spirit of brotherhood and compassion. The campaign included various fundraising initiatives, like a rally led by businessman Boby Chemmanur, which significantly contributed to reaching the financial goal. This successful crowdfunding campaign not only potentially saves Rahim’s life but also highlights the strong cultural and supportive bonds within the Keralite community worldwide.
