PM Modi, In Japan For Shinzo Abe’s Funeral, Meets PM Fumio Kishida

In their meeting on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida reaffirmed their commitment to furthering the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan. Prior to the event, PM Modi had a meeting with his Japanese counterpart. PM Modi is in Japan to attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

While PM Modi visited Japan for the Quad Leaders’ Meeting in May, Fumio Kishida visited India for the annual summit in March. According to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra on Monday, “the bilateral meeting between PM Modi and PM Kishida during the next visit will be an occasion for the two leaders to reiterate their commitment to further building the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.”

“These meetings underscored the two leaders’ commitment towards deepening India-Japan ties, particularly in the context of shaping a post-pandemic regional and global order,” he said ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Japan.

In the Indo-Pacific region, according to Vinay Kwatra, there is a significant convergence between India and Japan.

On Tuesday, mourners from more than a hundred nations, including more than 20 heads of state and governments, are anticipated. On July 8 in the southern Japanese city of Nara, Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while delivering a political address.
