Supreme Court Extends Stay on Inspection of Mathura Religious Site

The Supreme Court of India on Monday continued its suspension of the Allahabad High Court’s decision from December 14, 2023, which had approved an application for the inspection of the Shahi Idgah complex next to the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura. The inspection was to be conducted by a court-appointed commissioner. This development follows the Supreme Court’s initial stay of the High Court’s order issued on January 16, where the application for appointment of a commissioner was criticized as “vague.”

A bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta announced that the hearing for this matter is scheduled for August. The decision to defer comes ahead of a related application slated to be addressed by the High Court on Tuesday. The Supreme Court, however, made it clear that it has not halted other ongoing proceedings at the High Court related to this dispute.

The case involves the adjacent positioning of the Shahi Idgah Mosque and the historic Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple, a site of significant religious importance and a point of contention between different community groups. The Supreme Court’s ruling will remain pivotal in deciding the next steps towards resolving this long-standing dispute.
