Birender Singh and Son Leave BJP for Congress Amid Political Unrest

In a significant political move, former Union minister Birender Singh announced his departure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to rejoin the Congress, as reported by PTI. This decision comes on the heels of his son Brijendra Singh’s resignation from the Lok Sabha and the BJP, opting to join the Congress last month. Birender Singh confirmed his resignation from the BJP, stating he had already forwarded his resignation letter to BJP’s national president J.P. Nadda. He added that his wife, Prem Lata, a former MLA (2014-2019), is also leaving the BJP to join him in moving back to Congress.

Birender Singh’s political shift marks a return to his roots in the Congress, a party he had distanced himself from in 2014 to join the BJP in an event celebrated by then BJP president Amit Shah. This move ends Singh’s nearly four decades of association with the Congress, only to rekindle it now due to what he perceives as compelling political reasons, mirroring his son’s concerns. Brijendra Singh’s exit from the BJP and his leap to the Congress was attributed to “compelling political reasons”, marking a significant stance against the BJP’s policies and alliances, particularly its partnership with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in Haryana.

The political landscape in Haryana has been volatile, with the Singhs frequently opposing BJP’s strategies, including the controversial farm laws which have since been repealed. Their dissatisfaction culminated when Birender Singh threatened to leave the BJP if it continued its alliance with the JJP. Following his son’s move to Congress, the BJP severed its ties with the JJP, showcasing the impact of the Singh family’s political decisions in the state’s political dynamics.
