Prominent Canadian Builder Killed in Edmonton Shooting

In a tragic incident that has left the community in shock, Boota Singh Gill, a prominent builder and the head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Edmonton, Canada, was fatally shot multiple times on Monday. The attack occurred at a construction site linked to Gill’s business near the Millwood Rec Center in the Alberta province. Maninder Singh Gill, managing director of Radio India, reported that Sarabjeet Singh, a civil engineer also caught in the gunfire, is critically injured and battling for his life.

According to Maninder Singh Gill, an altercation involving three individuals at the construction site escalated, resulting in an Indian-origin construction worker allegedly opening fire on both Gill and Singh before committing suicide. The Edmonton Journal noted that law enforcement was summoned to the scene, located at Cavanagh Boulevard and 30 Avenue SW, where two bodies were discovered. Investigations into the motive behind the altercation are ongoing, and Boota Singh Gill had previously reported receiving threats and extortion calls related to his business.

The incident has spurred a wave of condolences and expressions of solidarity from community leaders and officials, including Member of Parliament Tim Uppal and Mayor Amarjeet Singh Sohi. It also reignites concerns over a series of extortions and arsons targeting home builders in Edmonton’s South Asian community, previously linked to a criminal network based in India. This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges and threats faced by builders in the region.
