BJP Vows to Rename Hyderabad to ‘Bhagyanagar’ if Comes to Power in Telangana

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit chief of Telangana, G Kishan Reddy, has reiterated the party’s commitment to renaming Hyderabad to ‘Bhagyanagar’ if the BJP secures power in the state. Reddy’s statement echoes recent assertions made by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a poll rally, emphasizing the renaming as a significant agenda for the party.

In an interview with ANI, Reddy pointed to the historical significance of renaming cities in India, citing instances such as Madras to Chennai, Calcutta to Kolkata, and Bombay to Mumbai. He highlighted that the renaming of Hyderabad would restore its old name, ‘Bhagyanagar,’ which, according to Reddy, was altered during the Nizam rule.

During his rally in Ghoshmahal constituency of Hyderabad, Yogi Adityanath underlined the BJP’s intent to rename the city, emphasizing its historical origins and claiming that the Congress was responsible for creating Hyderabad. He stated, “We have come to create Bhagyanagar,” reflecting the party’s determination to implement the name change once in power.

The BJP’s stance on renaming cities aligns with its actions in Uttar Pradesh, where cities like Allahabad were renamed to Prayagraj and Faizabad to Ayodhya. Furthermore, there are ongoing proposals to rename Aligarh as Harigarh, Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar, Firozabad as Chandra Nagar, and Mirzapur as Vidhya Dham.

The assertion by the BJP leadership in Telangana regarding the renaming of Hyderabad as ‘Bhagyanagar’ underscores the party’s commitment to historical and cultural identity changes, continuing a trend observed in various parts of the country. However, this proposition remains subject to the party securing power in the state.
