India Falls To 107 From 101 In Hunger Index Behind Pak, Nepal: Report
India has dropped from 101st to 107th place out of 121 nations in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) for 2022, trailing its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. According to the website of the Global Hunger Index, which records hunger and malnutrition, seventeen nations, including China, Turkey, and Kuwait, shared the top spot with a GHI score of less than five on Saturday.
The level of hunger in India was described as “severe” in the report, which was produced jointly by the German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe and the Irish humanitarian group Concern Worldwide.
In 2021, India was ranked 101 out of 116 countries. Now with 121 countries in the list, it has dropped to the 107th rank. India’s GHI score has also decelerated – from 38.8 in 2000 to the range of 28.2 – 29.1 between 2014 and 2022.
The government had criticised the report last year after India dropped below the 100th level, claiming the Global Hunger Index calculation technique was not scientific.

Undernourishment, child wasting (the percentage of children under the age of five who are wasted, or have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition), child stunting (children under the age of five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition), and child mortality are the four indicators used to calculate the GHI score (the mortality rate of children under the age of five).
