Supreme Court Directs SEBI Investigation Into Hindenburg Short Selling; Adani Group Stocks Surge

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has directed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the government to take action if the short-selling activities by Hindenburg Research that caused a substantial erosion in investors’ wealth have violated any laws. The apex court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud along with justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized SEBI’s responsibility to fortify regulatory mechanisms within the financial sector to safeguard investor interests. The court urged SEBI to prevent destabilization of the financial sector akin to the aftermath following Hindenburg’s report release.

Moreover, the court highlighted SEBI’s role in investigating whether Indian investors incurred losses due to Hindenburg’s actions and other associated entities engaging in short positions, potentially breaching any legal regulations. The Supreme Court’s directive also advised SEBI to utilize recommendations from an expert committee, previously appointed by the court to scrutinize India’s regulatory framework in light of the allegations against Hindenburg.

Following the court’s ruling, Adani Group’s shares experienced a notable upsurge. Adani Energy Solution Ltd spearheaded gains with a surge of over 14%, closely followed by Adani Total Gas Ltd, which rose by more than 11%. Additionally, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd and Ambuja Cements Ltd hit a 52-week high amidst this market momentum.

The market response to the Supreme Court verdict on the Hindenburg case was evident as Adani Group stocks collectively added a staggering ₹1.18 lakh crore in investor wealth. This surge propelled the conglomerate’s total market capitalization to an intraday high of ₹15.62 lakh crore, marking the highest valuation since January 27, 2023.

The Supreme Court’s directive not only underscores the gravity of investigating market manipulation but also signals a renewed focus on bolstering regulatory measures to ensure stability and protection for investors within India’s financial landscape.
