Supreme Court Grants Bail to AAP MP Sanjay Singh in Delhi Liquor Policy Case
In a significant development on Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who has been in custody for six months in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. The bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and P B Varale, ordered Singh’s release on terms and conditions set by the trial court. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had previously arrested Singh on allegations related to money laundering in the Delhi liquor scam, indicated that it had no objections to granting him bail.
The court’s decision was influenced by the lack of concrete evidence against Singh, particularly the absence of any recovered money linked to the alleged ₹2 crore bribe. The apex court stated, “Nothing has been recovered, there is no trace,” highlighting the insufficiency of material evidence against the AAP leader at this stage. The bench also emphasized that this bail should not set a precedent for future cases.
AAP leaders and supporters have expressed relief and joy over the court’s decision, with prominent party figures like Atishi and Raghav Chadha publicly celebrating the news. Atishi hailed the ruling with the words “Satyameva Jayate,” while Chadha described the day as emotional. The case against Singh involved accusations of his involvement in illegal activities related to the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy, including acquiring and concealing proceeds of crime. However, his bail plea was grounded on the argument that no direct role had been attributed to him in the predicate offence, a stance that has now led to his temporary release.
