Delhi on High Alert as Farmers’ March Threatens Major Disruption

In anticipation of a significant farmers’ march planned for February 13, Delhi Police is significantly tightening security measures along all the capital’s borders. Intelligence alerts have flagged the potential for large-scale protests, reminiscent of the impactful demonstrations seen in 2021. Farmer groups, including the influential Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, are mobilizing to pressure the Central government for action on various issues. Law enforcement officials have been instructed to enforce stringent measures to prevent the protestors from entering Delhi, with Haryana Police also deploying roadblocks and conducting mock drills to bolster the security efforts.

The protests, sparked by longstanding grievances with the Central government, have led to an increase in security preparations, with police forces gearing up for a potential early arrival of protestors before the scheduled march. The intelligence community has raised alarms about protestors aiming to gather at the residences of key government figures, including the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Agriculture Ministers. This has resulted in plans to block entries during nighttime, anticipating lesser force deployment compared to daytime hours.

The farmers, determined to make their voices heard, are expected to approach Delhi through various borders, including Shambhu (Ambala), Khanori (Jind), and Dabwali (Sirsa), equipped with tractors and trolleys loaded with supplies for a prolonged stay. With estimates suggesting a mobilization of 10,000 to 15,000 farmers, and an additional 2,000-2,500 tractor-trolleys, the protest under the ‘March to Delhi’ banner is poised to be a significant demonstration. Farmer unions are reportedly modifying tractors to serve as both storage and shelter, preparing for an extended protest duration at the designated sites.
