Indian Workers Rescued from Laos Return Home, Ministry Cautions Against Human Traffickers

In a significant operation coordinated by the Indian embassy in Laos, seventeen Indian workers who were duped into dangerous and unlawful employment in Laos have been safely repatriated. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced their return on Saturday, praising the embassy’s efforts and the support of the Laotian authorities. The minister highlighted the effectiveness of India’s diplomatic intervention, emphasizing that “Modi ki Guarantee works for all at home and abroad.”

This incident has prompted the external affairs ministry to issue a stern warning to Indian nationals about the perils of falling victim to human traffickers. The ministry has urged individuals seeking employment opportunities in Southeast Asia, particularly Cambodia, to exercise caution and conduct thorough background checks on potential employers. The advisory was released following reports of Indians being enticed by false promises of high-paying jobs, only to find themselves involved in cyber fraud and other illicit activities.

The ministry’s advisory specifically advises job seekers to utilize only authorized agents for overseas employment to avoid exploitation by human trafficking networks. The move is part of a broader effort to protect Indian citizens abroad, following recent incidents where Indians were promised jobs in Thailand but ended up being forced into cyber fraud schemes in Laos. The government’s proactive stance aims to safeguard the welfare of its citizens seeking opportunities abroad.
